The Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering has been recognized for student success in Advanced Placement program while broadening access.
[Bushwick, Brooklyn] – College Board announced that The Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering (AUPE), one of the top STEM high schools in Brooklyn, has been named to the 2024 Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning a Silver Distinction.
The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.
The Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering had 65% of seniors in the class or 2025 take at least one AP Exam during high school. AUPE offers 12 high school AP courses including African American Studies and English Literature, to Physics 1, Computer Science and Calculous. As a FutureReadyNYC school with a focus on technology and engineering, AUPE also offers a wide range of STEM electives such as Principles of Engineering, Chemistry, Geometry, Python Game Design, Introduction to Computer Science, Computer Science A, and Career Development.
“We are honored to be named to the AP School Honor Roll and are excited that 65% of our students take at least 1 AP course,” said AUPE Principal Jorge Sandoval. “By enrolling in AUPE’s AP courses, students can earn college credits, improve their academic profiles, and gain invaluable skills for their future. These opportunities enable every student to excel academically while exploring their passions.”
“AP gives students opportunity to engage with college-level work, to earn college credit and placement, and to potentially boost their grade point averages,” said Trevor Packer, head of the AP program. “The schools that have earned this distinction are proof that it is possible to expand access to these college-level courses and still drive strong performance – they represent the best of AP.”
Established in 2003, AUPE is a STEM high school in Bushwick, NY, with a mission to empower a community of diverse advocate, and at one of the top technology and engineering high schools in Brooklyn and Queens. AUPE has developed a unique approach to education that combines traditional teaching methods with cutting-edge technology, and offers courses designed to be interactive, hands-on, and tailored to the needs of each individual student.
College Board’s Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond.
